Dx Dialogues: the role of IL-13 in atopic dermatitis
Doris Day, MD, discusses the role IL-13 plays in atopic dermatitis.
Transcript
IL-13 downregulates important structural proteins like filaggrin, and it also alters lipid synthesis.
[MUSIC PLAYING] What you end up seeing is more transepidermal water loss.
You see structural changes in the skin. And that affects things like eosinophils and the itch
receptors. All of these are affected by IL-13, which is why we see this triad of allergic rhinitis, asthma,
and atopic dermatitis together. IL-13 is that thread that ties them all together.
And where you see those conditions, you know that IL-13 and its role along the Th2 pathway
is what's driving it. [AUDIO LOGO]
