The importance of a doctor of color, through the eyes of a patient
“The biggest difference, outside of the medicine itself, or the treatment itself, is literally a person of color took the time to hear me.” -Onilegogoro, bipolar disorder patient
Transcript
The medical treatment that I've received now that's been the most beneficial only started when I happened
to get a person of color, and the biggest difference outside of the medicine itself or the treatment itself is literally a person of color took the time to hear me.
[MUSIC PLAYING] Absolutely having a Black psychologist
changed my paradigm. It made me feel heard. She saw me the first time, and she told me-- she said my plate was so full I did not think
I could take another client. But I walked in the door, and she saw my plight. And she said my god this man needs help.
I said listen I don't know if I'm going to make it to the end of this day. I don't feel excited about life.
She said, well, we're going to see each other every day. She said we're going to do whatever we need to do to try to get you to hold on.
She did the work on my behalf unlike I had ever seen before by any medical professional ever.
She went above and beyond. She heard everything I said, and then she fought for me as well. This is the first time medically I feel good about the treatment
and as much as I feel like I have a team. And if I have an emergency, I can call my team. I'm appreciative because my life has changed.
[CHUCKLING] I haven't contemplated suicide every day. After decades, come from a place of thinking about suicide
literally every day to be in this place is truly an amazing experience. [AUDIO LOGO]
