How does vitamin B9 work?

Vitamin B9, or folate as it is commonly referred to, is essential to numerous bodily functions. Folate is used to synthesize DNA, repair DNA, and methylate DNA as well as to act as a cofactor in many other biological reactions. It is especially important in aiding rapid cell division and growth, such as in infancy and pregnancy. Vitamin B9 is also used to produce healthy red blood cells and prevent anemia.
Your body uses vitamin B9 (folic acid) to create healthy new cells, including red blood cells. A folic acid deficiency would result in anemia. Vitamin B9 also contributes to the healthy formation of a baby's brain and spine in the womb.
