Prevnar 13 (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) helps to prevent infections from S. pneumoniae bacteria, a prominent cause of childhood ear infections. The bacteria has been implicated in 20%-40% of ear infection cases, making it the most common cause of ear infections in children. However, ear infections can be caused by an array of bacteria strains, so Prevnar will not prevent all ear infections. Ear infections can result in hearing loss, speech delays and chronic inner ear problems. They also can progress to meningitis if left untreated. For these reasons ear infection prevention is extremely important, and although Prevnar cannot guarantee complete immunity it can significantly reduce your child's risk of developing an ear infection after vaccination.
