Can thyroid problems cause dry hair?

Hypothyroidism can cause dry hair. With this condition, your thyroid produces too little of the hormones your body needs. Besides dry hair, the condition also causes fatigue, depression, memory loss, weight gain, and other symptoms. Treatment involves taking hormones to make up for the ones not being produced by your body.

Thyroid problems can cause dry hair in some people. Dry hair can be a symptom of hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland makes too little thyroid hormone. In addition to dry hair, symptoms of hypothyroidism also include dry, brittle nails, fatigue and weakness, heavy menstrual periods, sensitivity to cold, and joint pain.
