Why are many teens overweight or obese?

Is it any wonder that 65 percent of all Americans are currently overweight, given the contents of the Standard American Diet (sometimes aptly referred to as SAD)? Unfortunately for us, the SAD is chock full of fats and processed foods, and low in complex carbohydrates and fiber -- in other words, it is the perfect regimen to put us at risk for cancer, heart disease, stroke, and a litany of other ailments.

We subsist primarily on processed, refined carbohydrates (cookies, pretzels, French fries), since these are the cheapest, least perishable, and fastest kinds of food to grab. What's truly sad about the SAD is that, even though we have no shortage of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean, high-value protein, and low-fat dairy items in our rich country, we continue to live on the most nutritionally bankrupt products. In this way we actually give ourselves diseases.
