Currently, the only means of stopping or reversing a stroke in progress is by administering a medication called tissue plasminogen activator. This is done in the hospital under the supervision of a physician. Unfortunately, this medication can only be used during a small window of time, within the first 3 to 4.5 hours after the onset of the signs and symptoms of a stroke. Also, there are many other reasons not to use this medication. In individuals for whom this medication cannot be used, physicians will focus on minimizing life-threatening and further complications from the stroke as well as regaining lost functions. All strokes are an emergency and require immediate medical attention.
