Stridor is not a disease itself but is a symptom of a health problem. The causes fall into three categories: congenital, infectious, and traumatic. Infectious causes include croup, tonsillitis, and laryngitis. Trauma can be caused by diagnostic tests done to the lungs or throat, breathing tubes, or swallowing a foreign object. Congenital causes are present at birth (although they may not manifest as stridor until later) and include vascular rings (compression of the trachea by a vein or artery) and laryngomalacia (a weak or floppy part of the larynx causing obstruction).
