Symptoms of a sprain may vary depending on how severely the ligament is stretched or torn. In general, sprains may cause pain, swelling, and bruising in the affected joint. The joint may also be stiff or difficult to move. Sometimes, a popping noise or sensation may occur at the time of the sprain, especially if the ligaments are torn.
