We're taught that what makes the Bible divine is its internal sense and its truth clothed in appearance and parable. Each story is written in what Swedenborg calls the language of correspondences, which is a representative interface between the material and spiritual realms. The Bible, then, is not merely a historical account of the children of Israel, but a detailed description of the spiritual journey each one of us takes as we regenerate from purely natural to spiritual beings.
The idea of an inner meaning within the Bible is not exclusive to Swedenborg. In fact, this teaching is the basis of the Zohar, the primary book of kabbalistic wisdom, as well. And the field of hermeneutics, or biblical interpretation, implies, by its very existence, that even Christians see layered and nuanced meanings within the literal sense.
