Do spirituality and religion have health benefits?

Cross-cultural ideologies allows for an examination of the relationship between cultural life experiences and personality. Culture is as important as any other factor in the development of personality across the life course as it contributes “to the complexities of the psychological process” (Betancourt and Lopez, 1993) and when it is defined in psychological terms it becomes adaptable to measurement.  Moreover, like social relationships, culture bears a strong interplay in the development of an individual’s personality as people are influenced by their immediate environment. For example, a child’s intellectual ability is strongly influenced by elements implemented by their family and the family’s culture (Moore, 1987). According to Moore (1987) the composition of an individual’s family unit bears a strong impact on the overall success of the child.  As the child ages these cultural influences remain constant. These influences can come in the form of religious ideologies, cultural mores, and traditional norms. Essentially, cultural beliefs, religious ideologies and morals can be directly linked to have a positive influence an individual over the lifespan (Betancourt and Lopez, 1993).
