What should I know about sertraline before taking it?

Before taking sertraline, you should be aware that when taking an antidepressant, there is a risk that the drug will actually worsen your condition. This drug may cause unusual changes in behaviors particularly during early treatment such as suicidal behaviors or thoughts. This risk also is particularly increased in children and adolescents taking antidepressants. Regular visits with your doctor are important for the doctor to monitor your condition and the effects of your medication. There is also the risk of other mental health side effects such as anxiety, panic, insomnia, aggression, impulsivity, and mania. You should alert those around you of your possible behavior changes and possible suicidal tendencies and side effects.

There is a risk of other serious side effects such as developing a serious condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). The risk for NMS increases if you suddenly stop taking the drug or combine it with certain medications like lithium or St. John's wort. Sertraline may cause dizziness and drowsiness - do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medication will affect you. This drug may also complicate other medical conditions, including bleeding conditions, purpura, seizure disorders, bipolar disorder, hyponatremia, metabolism conditions, blood circulation conditions, heart disease or heart attack, liver or kidney disease, and mania. Do not take this drug while pregnant unless absolutely necessary, and tell your doctor about all mediations you are taking before starting on sertraline .
