Are signs of childhood disintegrative disorder similar to schizophrenia?

There are several symptoms of childhood schizophrenia that are similar to symptoms found in childhood disintegrative disorder. They are:

• Lack of a normal range of emotions
• Change in language abilities
• Social skills and relationship difficulties

However, the two disorders are also very different. Childhood disintegrative disorder is diagnosed when children start to develop normally but lose many abilities after age 3, including speech, social skills, and bowel and bladder control. Most children with this condition are permanently affected, with many being categorized as severely disabled. Children who are diagnosed with schizophrenia at an early age may not be as severely disabled by their condition.
