Why do health agencies want to identify all the cases of flaccid paralysis?

The poliovirus infection and West Nile virus can both cause flaccid paralysis. These viruses are very contagious and dangerous. Government health agencies want to test everyone with flaccid paralysis so they can rule out these conditions as the cause. Although poliovirus is now rare due to vaccination, it is still a highly contagious and serious disease. If there were an outbreak, health agencies would want to begin immunizing people in that area.
