What are the main muscles of the back?

The main muscles of the back include the latissimus dorsi (also known as the lats),  rhomboids, trapezius, and erector spinae.  The lat muscle, while located on the back side of the body, primarily affects movement of the shoulder joint and is responsible for moving the arms toward the sides and behind the body.  The rhomboids are responsible for squeezing the shoulder blades together and down, while the trapezius, because it has different sections, can squeeze the shoulder blades together, move the shoulder blades down toward the thighs, and elevate or raise the shoulder blades up toward the ears.  The erector spinae are responsible for keeping our back extended and upright and for providing some stability to our hips and lower back.
