What is the role of the MUC16 gene in cancer?

Knocking down the MUC16 gene abolishes the cells' ability to form tumors. Larger tumor formation, higher tumor burden and decreased survival interval have been seen with the presence of MUC16. MUC16 may be associated with increased cell motility and more sites of metastases, which can translate into more aggressive tumors.
