Does exercise lead to osteoarthritis?

Eric Olsen
Fitness
Not only is there no evidence that sensible exercise causes osteoarthritis, it also appears that using the joints during regular exercise may reduce the risk of joint problems, probably by increasing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues in the joints and by stimulating the growth of new tissue. And because being overweight adds significantly to the wear and tear on the weight-bearing joints of the feet, knees, and ankles, and thus to the risk of osteoarthritis, regular exercise also protects the joints by contributing to weight loss.
