Who should not take MS Contin?

Experts say that certain people should not use MS Contin (morphine), an opioid typically prescribed for around-the-clock treatment of pain that's expected to last for an extended period of time. You may not be able to take MS Contin if you:
  • have respiratory depression
  • have acute or severe bronchial asthma
  • have an intestinal obstruction (paralytic ileus)
  • are allergic to morphine
  • have unusually high levels of carbon dioxide in the blood (hypercarbia)
  • have a history or a family history of drug or alcohol abuse
Other people may need to be monitored particularly closely if they use MS Contin, such as older people or people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
