What should I know about Dilaudid before taking it?

One of the most important things you should know before taking the pain medication Dilaudid (hydromorphone) is that it can be habit forming. Dilaudid belongs to a class of drugs called opioid analgesics. Some people who use opioid analgesics develop a physical and/or psychological dependence on them. Take Dilaudid only as directed by your doctor to reduce this risk.

Dilaudid can interact with certain other medications, so be sure to give your doctor a complete list of all over-the-counter and prescription drugs you currently take. Include all vitamins and dietary supplements you use too. Dilaudid may cause side effects such as nausea. Doctors recommend taking Dilaudid with a meal or beverage.
