Can I smoke cigarettes while I'm taking methadone?

You should not smoke cigarettes or use tobacco in any form while taking methadone, a drug used to treat pain or to prevent withdrawal symptoms in people who have stopped using narcotic drugs. Tobacco can cause methadone to be less effective. If you smoke, tell your doctor before you start taking methadone.
