If you have sleep apnea, your doctor is unlikely to prescribe the pain medication Nucynta (tapentadol) unless it's absolutely necessary to control your chronic pain. If you have this condition, in which your breathing becomes shallow and sometimes stops while you're asleep, even a standard dose of Nucynta can be dangerous. Because Nucynta tends to lower the breathing rate, it can cause people whose respiration is already compromised to stop breathing altogether. Be sure to let your doctor know if you have sleep apnea.
