Potassium chloride may interact with some medications and foods. Potassium is found in many foods. Therefore, you may need to make some dietary changes while you are taking potassium chloride to avoid having too much potassium in your blood. Low-sodium foods and salt substitutes can contain high levels of potassium and should be avoided. Some foods such as squash, spinach and lentils are naturally high in potassium; your doctor will recommend foods to avoid to prevent high levels of potassium in your system. Potassium chloride may also interact with high blood pressure medications, including angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (or ACE inhibitors) and angiotensin receptor blockers (or ARBs). Water pills (or diuretics), the drugs indomethicin, heparin, cyclosporin and others may also interact with potassium chloride. Avoid the herbal supplements such as dandelion, gossypol and licorice. Always be sure your doctor and pharmacist are aware of all medications and supplements you are taking, even if they are available over-the-counter.
