How common is myotonic dystrophy?

Scientists do not know the exact incidence of myotonic dystrophy. They believe that type 1, or DM 1, affects about 1 in 8,000 people worldwide, or about 40,000 people in the U.S. Type 2, or DM2, is much less common. Although scientists do not know exactly how many people have DM2, they believe that DM2 accounts for about 2 percent of all cases.
