Penicillamine may interact with some medications and increase the risk for side effects, including kidney and blood problems. These medications include: antacids, anti-malarial medications, some cancer treatments, cytoxic medications and iron. Penicillamine can also interact with digoxin, decreasing its effectiveness. You should not take penicillamine with aurothioglucose because the two medications will bind together, decreasing their effectiveness. You should wait at least two hours after taking penicillamine to take multivitamin supplements. Unless your doctor recommends a diet change as part of your treatment, you do not need to avoid any foods while taking penicillamine. You should, however, take penicillamine on an empty stomach either one hour before or two hours after eating.
