Leg muscle spasms during activity or at night are most commonly caused by a deficiency in electrolytes due to sweating during activities, sports or work. Although there may be other causes, a lack of proper electrolyte levels is most likely the culprit. You may try ingesting an electrolyte drink followed by water in a 1:2 ratio previous to activity to see if there is an effect. There are only a couple sports drinks that are studied enough to be able to provide proper electrolyte levels pre/during/and post exercise or activitiy that may have a positive effect. We would suggest trying this approach carefully and in moderation as some of those drinks are also high in carbohydrates and can cause spikes in sugar levels. Read labels carefully and act appropriately. If you have further questions or you don’t see a change using this strategy, you should contact your doctor or local sports medicine professional.
