What are the serious side effects of ferrous sulfate?

Serious side effects may occur with ferrous sulfate, such as severe allergic reactions. If these develop, get emergency medical help immediately. These may include:
  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat
There may be a link between excessive iron and increased risks for certain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and cancer. Higher levels of iron also may be associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis).
