If I'm going to have surgery, can I keep taking my metformin?

If you are going to have surgery, talk to your doctor about whether you can keep taking metformin (Glucophage, Fortamet) to control your blood sugar levels. He may have you stop taking this medication for a little while. Also let your doctor know if you're going to have an X-ray in which a dye will be injected. Your doctor may have you stop taking your medication for this procedure as well.
