How do time-outs help in settling things?

Time-outs are wonderful things. They are useful on so many levels. I love that they are flexible, in terms of both where and how long. They can be used on toddlers, teenagers and, in this case, even moms. They require neither yelling nor rationalizing, and whether or not they are an effective deterrent for the next round of bad behavior, they are an extremely effective method of interrupting the pattern at that moment.
