It may be that the same risk factors that predispose a person to adjustment disorder also make them more vulnerable to other illnesses. Veteran with adjustment disorder are at higher risk of suicide and substance abuse. Adjustment disorder may prolong the duration of other medical conditions, or interfere with their treatment. Overall, if you are having extreme difficulty coping with a life change or stressor, your resilience is compromised, which puts you at risk for additional health issues.
