How can weight loss affect the menstrual cycle?

Being either over or underweight can affect your menstrual cycle. If you are overweight, excess fat can change the balance of your hormones, which may cause absent, frequent or very heavy periods, which can also affect fertility. If you are able to obtain a healthy weight, this may normalize the menstrual cycle. If you lose too much weight and become underweight, this can also cause irregularities in the menstrual cycle, including absence of periods.
