Why is it helpful to participate in clinical trials?

Some people think that they won't make a difference if they participate in a clinical trial. However, you have the power to make a huge difference in the future of cancer treatment. Clinical trials can't work without participants. Without enough participants, a clinical trial could delay a potential breakthrough. As a participant, you will get the best available care and perhaps an additional drug or therapy that greatly increases your chances of stopping your cancer's growth.

In the ongoing fight against cancer, the new therapies and alternatives that have developed over time have come from clinical trials. They are necessary for the advancement of therapies.

We want you . . . to participate in a clinical trial.

  • Only 5 percent of people with cancer choose to participate in research. We’re not perfect with chemotherapy yet, so a chance to get standard versus what we believe to be superior treatment should be a simple decision. Ask your oncologist about trials that may be available for your form of cancer.
  • Women are not men with breasts. Because so many studies have been done solely on men, we don’t really know how to best treat women. Join studies that investigate women's health.
  • All races need to enroll to enhance their own health. For example, African Americans, justifiably leery due to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (in which poor black males early last century were followed for their syphilis for decades without treatment, despite penicillin acceptance as standard of care mid study), have not participated fully in research. Effective treatments differ between races, as attested by the FDA’s approval last year of the first race-specific heart failure drug—highly effective in African Americans and much less effective in Caucasians. This doesn’t happen without participation.
