What can I expect after lap band surgery?

Curtis L. Peery, MD
Surgery
Patients can expect to lose an average of 30-50% of their excess body weight over 1-3 years. They will need to see their weight loss team regularly to help achieve this goal. The lap band will need to be adjusted to achieve this result. Patients can expect adjustments to start 4-6 weeks after surgery and may need to be done as frequently as every 6 weeks until they are appropriately adjusted. This may take as many as 4-8 visits in the first year. After that visits can be less frequent but will have to continue at least once or twice a year.
