Do integrin receptor antagonists have any side effects?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Side effects of natalizumab may include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, chills, depression, itching, rashes, arm or leg pain, joint pain, poor liver function, digestive tract problems, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and a higher risk of infections. Women may have inflammation of the vagina. Some people taking natalizumab have developed PML, a viral brain infection. This is rare, but it can lead to death or permanent disability.

Side effects of vedolizumab may include inflammation of the nose and throat and poor liver function. Some people have an allergic reaction to the drug, with shortness of breath, flushing, rash, and increased blood pressure and heart rate. Vedolizumab raises your risk for infections, including serious ones, such as tuberculosis, salmonella, and giardiasis.

Some people taking natalizumab have developed PML, a viral brain infection. This is rare, but it can lead to death or permanent disability. Vedolizumab is a newer drug that works in a slightly different way than natalizumab, and is considered unlikely to cause PML. No cases of PML have been reported for vedolizumab.
