How can I prevent low blood glucose?

Your best bet is to practice good diabetes management and learn to detect hypoglycemia so you can treat it early—before it gets worse.

In people who have diabetes, the best way to prevent hypoglycemia is to follow your doctor's instructions carefully. This may include taking your medications, monitoring your blood sugar, eating healthy meals at regular intervals and exercising. In people who do not have diabetes, true hypoglycemia is unusual, but can be caused by stomach surgery for weight loss, enzyme deficiencies, overconsumption of alcohol, some medications, eating disorders and other illnesses. Symptoms of hypoglycemia, however, usually without truly dangerous low blood sugar levels, can sometimes occur after eating, especially carbohydrate-rich meals. These symptoms can often be prevented by eating meals higher in protein and fat or by eating several small meals rather than three large ones. Truly low blood sugar readings in a person without diabetes is rare and requires thorough medical evaluation.
