How common is a heart attack?

Heart attacks are a common condition. Every year, at least 1.5 million Americans suffer heart attacks. Heart disease or disorder is the leading cause of deaths for men and women. The disease also affects people of all ethnic backgrounds at about the same rate. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in 2010, heart disease, of which heart attacks are a major component, will cost more than $316 billion to cover health services, medication, lost productivity in the United States.
