How common is hearing impairment?

The World Health Organization estimated in 2014 that 360 million people in the world were affected by moderate to profound hearing impairment. Half of these cases could have been prevented through early diagnoses and treatment. In the United States, over 30 million people have hearing impairment,  which comes to about 1 in every 8 people. 30 to 40 percent of people who are over 65 have major hearing loss.
