What causes pili torti?

The most common form of pili torti is inherited, although in many cases the affected person's parents do not show symptoms of the condition. It can be acquired in people with certain conditions, like specific types of lupus and sclerosis. Pili torti can also occur alongside a number of rare syndromes, like Bjornstad syndrome and Crandall syndrome. People with these syndromes usually suffer from many other serious symptoms of their condition, as well.
