What causes emotional trauma?

Events that are unpredictable, unexpected, threatening, uncontrollable, and frightening can result in emotional trauma. Specifically, trauma can result if an event occurs that threatens a person's life or security, (whether directly experienced or witnessed) and causes fear or helplessness. Events such as combat stress, sexual abuse, and rape are cited as events that may elicit emotional trauma. Automobile accidents, hospital procedures, and illness can also be factors contributing to trauma.
