Why are mitochondrial diseases considered unpredictable?

Mitochondrial diseases are very unpredictable diseases because symptoms may vary from day to day. Patients may have days that go very well, and other days that go very badly. Symptoms can pop up at any moment, due to sudden changes in the environment or in the body itself. Caregivers must be ready to deal with sudden changes and symptoms. The outlook for each person's disease is also very difficult to predict. The disease may progress quickly, or it may appear to stabilize or any combination of possibilities.
