What is Prevacid?

Prevacid, the prescription drug lansoprazole, is a medication used to help prevent and heal ulcers in the stomach or intestines. Combined with other drugs, it is used to destroy the ulcer-creating bacteria H. pylori. Additionally, it treats erosive esophagitis or gastroesophageal reflux disease, both conditions where a person's esophagus is injured by improperly flowing stomach acid. Prevacid may also be used to treat other medical problems connected with too much stomach acid including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This drug works by reducing stomach acid production, allowing conditions caused by excessive stomach acid to heal. It is classified as a proton pump inhibitor medication.
