The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given the drug a rating of C, meaning that animal studies have suggested the drug may have harmful effects on a fetus, but there are no good human studies. The drug should only be used if the benefits clearly outweigh the potential risks.
Because the drug is likely excreted in breast milk, and could harm the infant, women should not breastfeed while taking Nexium.
