Sebaceous glands (which excrete sebum, the body's natural protective oils) begin to form in the fourth month of gestation. Sebaceous glands are found throughout the body, except on the soles and palms. They are found most abundantly on the scalp and face. Most commonly, sebaceous glands are attached to a hair follicle; in some cases, like on the lips and eyelids, they are not.
