How does estrogen production affect puberty?

At the onset of puberty, ovaries will begin to produce estrogen in girls. Estrogen will prompt the development of secondary sex characteristics such as breast growth and menstruation. Delayed puberty can be treated with supplemental estrogen hormone. However, excessive amounts of estrogen can stunt growth. In some cases, teens can develop osteoporosis if estrogen production or administration is too long delayed.
