How does a thalamotomy help essential tremors?

If you have a severe essential tremor that is debilitating, your doctor might suggest that you get a thalamotomy. This surgical procedure destroys part of the thalamus which is the area of the brain that helps to control muscle movement. This procedure is currently used less frequently than deep brain stimulation because DBS has fewer side effects.
