What are pancrelipase capsules?

Pancrelipase capsule is a prescription enzyme combination that improves food digestion when the pancreas is not functioning properly. The capsules are filled with tiny enteric coated microspheres that contain pancreatic enzymes--lipase, amylase and protease-- that aid in the digestion of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. The enteric coating keeps the enzymes from breaking down too early in the stomach and allows the enzymes to accomplish their function in the intestines. Pancrelipase capsules are given to people who have pancreatic enzyme insufficiency. Examples would be conditions, such as cystic fibrosis or chronic pancreatitis, any intestinal or ductile obstruction and other pancreatic diseases. Those who have recently had a pancreatectomy or gastrointestinal bypass surgery are also candidates for pancrelipase capsules. This medication is available by prescription and over-the-counter.
