What are treatment options for goiter?

If your thyroid is functioning at a normal level, you may not need treatment for a goiter. However, if your goiter is due to an underactive or overactive thyroid, you may need to take thyroid hormones to regulate its function. Radioactive iodine is another medication option to decrease the size of a goiter. If your goiter is so large that it is causing difficulty swallowing or breathing, your doctor may recommend surgery.
