What are the benefits of parathyroid surgery?

There are many benefits to parathyroid surgery. Over time, benign tumor(s) of the parathyroid can cause serious problems. Some patients develop severe osteoporosis, kidney stones, uncontrolled hypertension, ventricular hypertrophy, spasm of the vessels and high heart rates. Overall, parathyroid tumor(s) can make some patients feel very bad while others may develop long term problems. The medical literature has reported studies where patients have seen dramatic improvements including blood pressure returning to normal levels. New guidelines from professional organizations indicate that parathyroid surgery is often the best option, and patients should be evaluated since removal of the benign tumors is the only definitive treatment.
