Does goiter run in families?

Some causes of goiters are inherited. Some autoimmune disorders which affect your thyroid do run in families, so talk to your doctor if someone in your family has a goiter or an autoimmune disorder. Other causes of goiters, however, such as an iodine deficiency, are environmental.
