Desmopressin is a synthetic version of natural vasopressin (also called antidiuretic hormone, or ADH) which reduces urine output. However, desmopressin is more potent and much longer acting than natural vasopressin.

Desmopressin (also called DDAVP for its long chemical name) is prescription only and is used to:

  • Control nighttime bed-wetting
  • Control symptoms of a disorder called diabetes insipidus in which the body produces more urine
  • Control excessive thirst and reduce the amount of urine caused by certain head injuries and surgeries
