Can sudden emotional distress lead to shock?

Emotional shock and medical shock are distinctly different. Researchers have found that sudden emotional trauma, like the loss of a loved one, may cause the heart to weaken mimicking a heart attack, but recovery is much quicker than in a heart attack. Because the physical difference in broken heart syndrome (as it is often called) and heart attack are not the same, true medical shock is not a risk in emotional shock.
